How much do certain finishes cost?
Clients are often surprised at the cost of Wall & Surface art. Here's how we explain it to our clients:
When you have a room painted, the painter used "production" tools like rollers or a spray rig, and covers a large area quickly (usually an average of 300 square feet per hour). The painter can usually get by with one coat of paint. If he or she is going over a light color with a dark one (white to dark blue, for instance), or a dark color with a light one (i.e. dark blue to white), he or she will probably have to go around the room twice, once to prime, the other to paint. It remains, however, a relatively fast process. Wall finishing on the other hand is not a production process.
Wall finishes sometimes require a "base coat" (coat of paint) before the decorative painting process can begin. Like a painter, the finisher can complete this process fairly quickly. When executing finishes, artisans use small tools like rags, cheesecloth and trowels.
They cover only a small area at a time and work to ensure that there are no "dry lines" (overlap marks) or "picture framing" (too dark or too light around ceilings, floors and corners). The decorative painter usually works 45 to 60 square feet per hour. Also, the fact that there is little wall space in a room does not mean it will cost less for labor. Lots of built in cabinets or doors and windows actually take longer go around than a wall with no openings.
A professional finisher will take the time to make sure that all the edges are "clean", not lighter or darker than the rest of the finish. That takes a great deal of time and will be reflected in the estimate. Kitchens and bathrooms are especially time consuming. In general, wall finishes are "layered," meaning that the artisan does the decorative painting more than one time around the room. Also, wall & surface finishes require a protective coat so that the surface can be cleaned without fading or removing the finish.
As you can see, Wall & Surface Art requires more time and energy than painting. Therefore the cost is substantially more. A good rule of thumb is that finishing a room will cost four to six times more than hiring a professional painting contractor to paint the same room a solid color.
What is the Pricing for Custom Design Finishes?
Pricing for custom design finishes and wall glazing start at $4.00 per square foot and go up based on the number of layers, colors, techniques being applied. Not to mention how many times needed to go around the room. Pricing for plasters including Venetian plasters, (Veneziano, Grassello, Marmorino, Carrera, Tadelakt) textured stone and decorative plasters start at $8.00 a square foot and can go as high as $15-$30 a square foot.
Another factor to consider is the ease or difficulty for us to access the work area, special equipment needed such as scaffolding, sprayers, etc and the estimated time frame for us to complete the entire project.
We are typically booked 4 months in advance, however, design consultations should be done as soon as possible to ensure that you are placed into our work schedule. The fee for a consultation is $100.00 and once the job is secured taken off the price of the job. Our minimum job fee is $500.00.
After the initial consultation, a sample/material charge of $150.00 is required and/or to secure and start the job a 50% deposit is required to schedule you on the books. Then the remaining balance when the job is completed. If the job lasts more than a week a third payment is due on each Friday that our artists/decorative wall painters are working.
